The Photonics Research Group at LHFT explores cutting-edge technologies at the intersection of light and data. Our research spans optical communications, distributed sensing, and the innovative field of Integrated Communication and Sensing (ISAC). Additionally, we develop novel sensing solutions based on optical tweezers and drive the digitalization of photonic systems to meet the demands of next-generation networks.

Optical Communication
In addition to classical fiber-optic telecommunication systems, our research focuses on free-space optical (FSO) links enhanced by intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS). Our work covers coherent transmission, modulation and signal processing in order to increase the capacity and range of fiber-optic and free-space networks in real-world conditions.
Optical Fiber Sensing
Optical fiber sensors offer numerous advantages compared to electrical sensors. Here, we investigate distributed and quasi-distributed sensors, including Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) based on spontaneous Raman scattering with our home-built interrogator, higher-order mode sensing, and multiplexed Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor networks. Our in-house FBG inscription lab allows us to prototype custom gratings.

Integrated Communication & Sensing
Combining our expertise in optical communication and sensing, we realize integrated solutions for both fiber and free-space links for applications such as link monitoring, localization, and turbulence-aware operation.
Optical Trapping
Optical trapping of microparticles in hollow-core fibers (HCFs) in combination with precise particle localization provides an innovative sensing platform. Functionalized particles enable multi parameter measurements, e.g., temperature and electric fields.

Digitalization
A key focus of our research is bridging the gap between physical optical systems and smart, data-driven architectures via digital twins, web-based applications, and secure cloud connectivity. Where beneficial, machine learning is applied.
